What’s open source

Up until recently iphone has dominated the phone world, Mac operating systems has had a nice run but the time has come for them to step aside and let the real computing take place in the shape of Open Source Linux!
Up until now, the only people who where able to use Unix / Linux where technical people. Today with Google’s Linux Open Source Android the game has changed and changed with a bang!
A lot of people are asking me "what’s open source?". well,,, in a nutshell it’s the ability to share your code with the world. Not be corporate about it and let people like you and me take a look, modify and customize the operating system to our likings. Basically lifting annoying restrictions that you would otherwise get with other operating systems like Windows and Mac. There are a lot of smart people out there that can and do contribute to the open source code and that’s all free and the way it should be.
Let me give you an example: Let’s say I would write a program, one of the questions you may ask me would be why bother writing the program?
Here are some of the answers:
1. School project.
2. Fun.
3. Make money.
4. Use it on my portfolio.
5. Street credit.
6. Show off.
7. Bragging rights.
8. Evolution of technology.
If my motivation is to make money, then I will be greedy and not share my code with anyone so that I can make the most amount of money. The code could even be bad and I will not even care because once I sell the application then I’m stuck with the code.

If my motivation is to elevate technology to a higher level for the benefit of this planet, then I would share my code with everyone, thus allowing others to look at it and make it better.

There are so many different solutions to a single problem / quest / idea, that no one man or one company can see everything, and that’s where open source comes in.

Instead of just me dealing with the application, it becomes a global application that can be tweaked be anyone and everyone who know how to write code.

  1. Someone very special to me just bought me my DROID and I must say, after the first hour, all my fears about this amazing piece of technology went right out the window. It does everything and anything...People would benefit from understanding the extent of what this phone can do for society and expanding their knowledge....Enjoy DROIDING everyone!! I know I am....and its only been two days...crazy!!!!
